Bienvenue!
Welcome to our
website from all of us here in Juilly, the birthplace of the Institute of the
Sisters of St. Louis, founded by the Abbé Louis Marie Eugène Bautain in 1842.
Successive generations of St. Louis Sisters, irrespective of what country they
come from, have looked to Juilly as the family home, the place where their story
began.

It is a place of pilgrimage which literally gets them in touch with their
origins: they have only to go up the central staircase with its elegant
wrought-iron banisters to remember the founders and the many Sisters who have
gone up the same stairs before them. Built on the site of an old seventeenth
century farmhouse, the house, which began life as a hotel, dates from 1794. The
Sisters, then known as the Dames de St. Louis, took possession on November 13,
1842 and here their successors have been ever since, carrying out the mission
for which they were founded over a hundred and sixty years ago. It is here too
that the archives are kept, those documents which throw light on the origins of
the Institute and serve as a point of reference to its present and its future.
